Beginning in March, Pennsylvania College of Technology's Technology Transfer Center will offer three six-week instructional sessions in yoga for beginners and experienced yoga practitioners.
"Introduction to Yoga A Beginning Practice" and "Introduction to Yoga A Foundation Practice" will provide participants with a foundation series of asana (posture) that can be practiced anywhere. The more advanced "Hatha Yoga Asana Intensive" session provides an opportunity for continued exploration and growth in yoga practice.
The cost for each six-week instructional session is $40. The classes will meet in the Klump Academic Center auditorium. Call the TTC at (570) 327-4775 to register or to receive more information.
Descriptions of the three sessions follow:
Introduction to Yoga - A Beginning Practice (CON292-02) This six-week session will provide a comprehensive introduction to hatha yoga. This includes a review of fundamental asana for a solid foundation practice. Each class will include asana practice and relaxation. Those who have never practiced yoga, as well as those wishing to refine their understanding, will benefit. No experience is necessary. This general overview will also examine asana practice as it relates to posture, balance, flexibility, strength, skeletal and muscular integrity, health benefits, relieving tension, and the restorative qualities of yoga asana. The class meets 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 4 through April 15 (the class will not meet March 11).
Introduction to Yoga - A Foundation Practice (CON293-01) This second six-week session will provide a further introduction to the art and science of hatha yoga. This asana practice session is a continuation and expansion of fundamental asana covered in the previous class. These sessions will include a review of the fundamental asana, examine sequencing and provide a broader exploration of yoga asana for a solid foundation practice. Each class will include asana practice and deep relaxation. Some experience is necessary. The class meets 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. on Thursdays, March 6 through April 17 (the class will not meet March 13).
Hatha Yoga Asana Intensive (CON 515-02) These six yoga sessions will provide an intensive hatha yoga practice for regular practitioners. This includes a review of the fundamental asana and a broader exploration of yoga practice. Each class will include asana practice and deep relaxation. These sessions will be fairly vigorous and will include some pranayama practices (breathing). The practice examines a sequence of 44 asana for flexibility, strength and balance and includes standing poses; abdominal strengthening and energizing; seated, prone and supine poses; backward bends; forward bends; twists; inverted poses (limited); restorative postures; deep relaxation; and breathing practices. Experience is necessary. Completion of Yoga 1 and 2 (or permission of the instructor) is needed to register. The class meets 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. on Mondays, March 3 through April 14 (the class will not meet March 10).
