Wednesday, November 27, 2002
A Pennsylvania College of Technology student competed on a team that finished second in the recent "All-Star Bowl" competition at the 2002 Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society's International Student Games in Chicago.
Twelve teams of college and technical school students participated in the annual event, which includes an "All-Star Bowl," in which students field on-the-spot questions, and a "Practical Competition," featuring a problem-solving session with three exercises.
Nathan N. Hoy, Danville, an Electronics Engineering Technology student in Penn College's School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies, competed on an "All-Star Bowl" team sponsored by ABB Inc. Analytical Products Division, Lewisburg, W.Va. Hoy's teammates were Clyde Boyles, Bluefield State College, Bluefield, W.Va; Jewell Campbell, West Kentucky Tech; and Roberto Garriock, British Columbia Institute of Technology.
The ISA Games attracted teams from Canada, Italy, Mexico, Russia and the United States. Besides Penn College, team members represented IBEW Local Union 98, Philadelphia; Bluefield State College; California Polytechnic University; the University of Florida, Gainesville; Northwest Iowa Community College; West Kentucky Tech; British Columbia Institute of Technology; Lambton College, Sarnia, Ontario; Northern Alberta Institute of Technology; Catania University, Italy; IPN Zacatenco and ITQ, Mexico; and St. Petersburg State University of Airspace Instrumentation, Russia. The teams were sponsored by industry companies.
A new format was used for the 10th anniversary of the games. Students from different colleges worked together in the All-Star Bowl. This encouraged interaction among the participants and helped them prepare for the real world, in which they must work effectively with co-workers they have not selected.
