Wildcat Golfers Finish Second, Fourth in State Championships

Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers had their best showing in 20 years at the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association Championship.
Matt Haile, a freshman from Shikellamy High School in Sunbury, finished second with rounds of 81-72 and Christian Scheller, a freshman from Moscow, ended fourth with rounds of 78-79 during action Monday and Tuesday on the Penn State Blue Course. Haile and tournament winner Nathan Fry of Keystone College were the only two golfers to shoot par during the event. Northampton Community College won the team title.
"They did great," observed Wildcat coach Chet Schuman of his golfers. "I said from the very beginning that these kids could shoot and they proved it at States.
"Haile came back strong Tuesday, when it got cold and windy, and proved what a quality young man he is," Schuman said, adding that, as a result of their finishes, Haile and Scheller were awarded all-PCAA honors.
The last Wildcat golfer to fare as well in the state championship was Dan McKean, who took the individual crown with rounds of 71-77 in 1982 when the school was known as Williamsport Area Community College.
Although they didn't qualify for states, two other Penn College golfers, Brandon Goscominski (Southern Columbia) and Kyle Renn (Shikellamy), also are expected to return next year and keep the team in the thick of things on both the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference and PCAA levels.
