Allenwood Teen-Ager Awarded First Madigan Memorial Scholarship

Thursday, May 23, 2002

A Lycoming County teen-ager will be the first recipient of a scholarship established at Pennsylvania College of Technology earlier this year to honor the memory of the late wife of state Sen. Roger A. Madigan, R-Luthers Mills.

The "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar Committee has selected Thomas Hamm, of State Route 44, Allenwood, to receive the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship.

Mrs. Madigan, of Luthers Mills, Bradford County, passed away unexpectedly in January, following a brief illness. The memorial scholarship is open to high-school students who attend Sen. Madigan's "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar held annually at Penn College and subsequently enroll as full-time students at the College.

Hamm is a senior at Montgomery Area High School and will enter the College's General Studies major this fall. In addition to attending this year's Student Government Seminar, Hamm also attended the seminar in 2000.

As with all of the applicants, Hamm was required to write an essay describing the community service he has performed and the value it has added to the community.

Hamm serves as an assistant basketball coach and caretaker of a community field, is active in church services and works as a farmhand. He's also involved in basketball, football and track and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Technology Students Association.

The Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship can be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, housing, tools and other required supplies.

Sen. Madigan's "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar brings together students from high schools throughout his senatorial district with elected officials, members of the Commonwealth's executive branch, representatives of special-interest groups and members of the news media for panel discussions that provide students with insight into the workings of state government.
