Friday, May 17, 2002

The beneficial effects of yoga on the mind and body have been touted by many in recent years. Two six-week, noncredit courses being offered this summer by Pennsylvania College of Technology's Technology Transfer Center will provide a comprehensive introduction to this popular form of exercise.

"Introduction to Yoga A Beginning Practice" will be offered May 23 through June 27. The class will meet from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. in Room 100 (the "Quiet Lounge") of the Bush Campus Center at Penn College. The cost for the sessions is $40.

The course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Hatha Yoga. Included will be a review of fundamental asana (posture) for a solid foundation practice. Each class will include asana practice and relaxation. Those who have never practiced yoga, as well as those wishing to refine their understanding, will benefit from the class.

No previous experience is necessary for this introductory level class. The general overview will also examine asana practice as it relates to posture, balance, flexibility, strength, skeletal and muscular integrity, health benefits, relieving tension, and the restorative qualities of yoga asana.

"Introduction to Yoga Part 2 Foundation Practice" will be offered July 11 to Aug. 15. This class will meet from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. in Room 100 of the Campus Center. The Cost for this course is also $40.

This second six-week session will provide a further introduction to the art and science of Hatha Yoga. There will be a continuation and expansion of fundamental Hatha Yoga asana for a solid foundation practice. Each class will include asana practice and deep relaxation.

"Yoga is a powerful form of exercise that is great for improving many aspects of a person's physical and emotional well-being," said Thomas G. Woodson, TTC project coordinator and facilitator for the courses. "It's a wonderful way to stay healthy, feel good, lessen stress and prevent the buildup of toxins that can lead to disease."

Participants are advised to wear loose-fitting clothing (shorts and T-shirt are preferred) and to bring a blanket, thick towel and small towel to the first class. Those who have a yoga mat and strap are asked to bring them, as well.
