Penn College Group to Join in 'Pennsylvania Leadership Day'
Wednesday, April 3, 2002
Annette Kilgus, Pennsylvania College of Technology's December 2001 commencement speaker, has been designated as one of the presenters who will share their success stories in Harrisburg on April 15 for the Pennsylvania Leadership Day event being sponsored by the Pennsylvania Women Work! organization.
Kilgus, who earned a certificate in Heavy Construction Equipment Technician from Penn College, previously completed the College's New Choices/New Options life-skills/career-guidance program. She will deliver her remarks in a Capitol Rotunda ceremony.
A group of New Choices/New Options staff, students and supporters from Penn College will join Kilgus at the daylong event, which will also feature visits with elected officials. Henrietta K. Hadley, a coordinator for New Choices/New Options at the College, serves on the planning committee for Pennsylvania Leadership Day.
A mother of two young sons, Kilgus had been an office worker for nine years before entering the New Choices/New Options program in October 1999. She went on to enroll in the Heavy Construction Equipment Technician certificate major at Penn College. Currently, she works for a firm in the State College area.
In addition to delivering the Dec. 20 commencement address, Kilgus also was accorded the honor of operating the backhoe that dug the first scoops of dirt at groundbreaking ceremonies for Penn College's Student and Administrative Services Center, currently under construction.
The participants in Pennsylvania Leadership Day will hear a keynote address from state Treasurer Barbara Hafer and meet with gubernatorial candidates in the May primary election.
New Choices/New Options at Penn College provides career-development opportunities for single parents, displaced homemakers and anyone wishing to enter career programs considered to be nontraditional for their gender.
Founded in 1994, Pennsylvania Women Work! is an affiliate of "Women Work! The National Network for Women's Employment." The network includes individuals and community-service organizations, such as the New Choices/New Options Career Development Centers.
