Pennsylvania College of Technology received awards in national competitions recently for a marketing brochure, its quarterly magazine and its television cooking series on PBS.
"Admissions Marketing Report," the national newspaper of admissions marketing, honored Penn College with two awards in the 16th Annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition.
The College's quarterly publication, "One College Avenue," received a Silver Award in the "Newsletter" category for schools with enrollments of 5,000 to 9,999. "One College Avenue" is developed in-house by a small staff of writers, editors and designers who perform other marketing and media-relations functions as well in the Office of College Information& Community Relations.
"One College Avenue" is distributed to students, prospective students and families, alumni, employees, retirees, donors, directors, board and committee members and special friends of the College. Staff members involved with the publication are Tom Wilson, editor; Joseph Yoder, editorial contributions; Heidi Mack, Deborah Carter, Park Williams, Larry Kauffman and Tina Decker, design and production assistance; and Connie Funk, who compiles "Alumni Notes."
The College received a Merit Award in the "Search Pieces" category (for schools with 5,000 to 9,999 students) for its admissions-marketing brochure, "This is the Real World." Development, design and pre-press work were done in-house for the brochure, which complemented the College Viewbook and College Catalog. Staff members Mack, Carter, Williams, Kauffman and Decker provided the design and production work for this publication as well.
"You're the Chef," Penn College's cooking series on PBS, won a bronze Telly Award in the "Entertainment Program" category for its third-season premiere episode, "Beef Bash," which featured Sauteed Beef Tenderloin. "You're the Chef" is a co-production of Penn College and WVIA, the PBS affiliate in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The winning episode featured the talents of co-hosts Chef Paul Mach, an assistant professor in Penn College's School of Hospitality, and Tom Speicher, Penn College's broadcast media specialist, as well as director Kris Hendrickson of WVIA.
The Telly is one of the most sought-after awards in the TV, commercial and video industry. Only 14 to 18 percent of more than 11,000 entries in a wide variety of categories were awarded a Bronze Telly. Past winners of Tellys include DreamWorks SKG, HBO, Home & Garden Television and A&E.
"These awards recognize the commitment to excellence exhibited by all members of the team," said Elaine J. Lambert, director of college information and community relations, who was involved in concept development, copywriting and editing for the projects. "We approach our work with professionalism and an assurance that we represent an institution committed to inspiring excellence. Our practical, hands-on involvement with these projects is very similar to Penn College's well-known approach to teaching and learning."
