North Campus to Host Webcast Forum on "Digital Divide"

Monday, January 15, 2001

Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus will serve as one of 11 host locations statewide for the next Pennsylvania Rural Development Council Rural Issues Forum, which will use a new Web-based format to address the rural "digital divide" and related telecommunications issues.

The live webcast will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, Jan. 26, in Room 117 at the North Campus, located on Route 6 east of Wellsboro. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m; light refreshments will be available.

Scheduled topics include:

  • A presentation and update on infrastructure deployment throughout rural Pennsylvania
  • A presentation by representatives of a rural community on how they implemented a community-technology solution
  • A discussion of resources and technical assistance available to rural communities

The quarterly Rural Development Council meetings offer participants the opportunity to learn about issues important to rural Pennsylvania and to meet with others across the state to discuss solutions using interactive technologies. Presenters discuss a wide range of public and private initiatives, legislation and other matters, and participants can ask questions and participate directly with those at other locations.

The Pennsylvania Rural Development Council is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical association addressing the concerns of rural Pennsylvania. Council committees focus on issues such as community and economic development (including tourism); education, training, and workforce development; health; housing; telecommunications and information technology; transportation; infrastructure; and forest-based development. The Council is open to individuals and organizations.

Although participants may attend any of the meeting locations, the North Campus is making its facilities available for Rural Development Council meetings as a convenience to residents and business-and-industry representatives in Northcentral Pennsylvania.

The webcast is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited, and registration is encouraged. To register or receive more information, contact the North Campus at (570) 724-7703 or the Pennsylvania Rural Development Council at (717) 772-9030.
