Students in the Baking and Pastry Arts program in the School of Hospitality at Pennsylvania College of Technology will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with a man considered by his peers to be the best "sugar artist" in the industry.
Ewald Notter, founder and owner of the International School of Confectionery Arts in Gaithersburg, Md., will be at Penn College on Jan. 26-27 to present a "Sugar Art" workshop.
Fifteen students enrolled in the Sugar Art course in the associate-degree Baking and Pastry Arts major will watch and learn as Notter demonstrates his prowess in the art of casting, pulling and blowing sugar. Notter will work with the students to help them produce a centerpiece that will be displayed on a Grand Buffet at the end of the semester.
The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27. In addition, Notter will present a demonstration for all School of Hospitality students from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.
"This experience and opportunity will have a lifelong impact on each student's education and career," said Suzann L. Major, associate professor of food and hospitality management/culinary arts at Penn College.
Notter's team won the Gold Medal in the 1999 U.S. Pastry Team Competition at Beaver Creek, Colo. He has won 15 gold medals from competitions in more than 10 countries, judged international pastry competitions, completed an apprenticeship in Baden, Switzerland, and learned sugar decoration under Willy Pfund in Zurich, Switzerland.
Notter established the International School of Confectionery Arts in 1982 in Zurich. The school caters to the needs of pastry chefs and confectionery enthusiasts around the world, offering expert instruction in the art of cast, pulled and blown sugar, as well as sugar and chocolate decorations. Internationally renowned guest instructors teach a variety of specialty classes there on a regular basis.
