Nine students from Pennsylvania College of Technology placed first or second in their respective categories at the Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Workshop held recently at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The event was a preliminary competition for the statewide conference scheduled for March 31 to April 2 in State College, in which some 300 students from two dozen colleges will participate.
Phi Beta Lambda is a national organization for students in postsecondary schools and colleges who are enrolled in business or business-related programs. Its goals are to provide students with opportunities to develop vocational business competencies and to promote a sense of civic and personal responsibility.
Dennis R. Williams, associate professor of business administration at Penn College and the faculty adviser for the chapter, said nine of the 10 students representing the College in the leadership workshop came away winners, a testament to their preparation and skills.
"I am involved with the testing as one of the state executive board members, and the test scores in most events were higher this time than in the past five years of testing," Williams said.
Williams praised the students for earning their own money to make the trip and for their professional demeanor.
"We don?t have to worry about the future, with students like this coming along," he said.
Capturing a first place at the event, which featured about 80 students from 10 colleges, was Justin G. Treher, 425 Cumberland Ave., Chambersburg, who competed in the Computer Concepts category.
Eight Penn College students placed second. The students and their categories are:
Danielle N. Caccia, Mildred, Business Communication; Elizabeth M. Derrick, Muncy, Information Management; Martin P. Farmer, Blue Ridge Summit, Public Speaking; Lucas W. Mellinger, Newville, Job Interview; Jessica R. Nanna, Johnstown, Business Decision-Making; Joshua J. Randolph, Lewistown, Business Decision-Making; Jackie R. Schriner, Ulster, Business Decision-Making; and Diana J. Shoemaker, Millmont, Human Resource Management.
All are eligible to compete in the state conference in State College, Williams said.
