Penn College Chefs Cook With State Products at Farm Show

Pennsylvania food and wine products will be in the culinary spotlight when students and faculty from Pennsylvania College of Technology cook up some delectable dishes at the upcoming Pennsylvania Farm Show, which is set for Jan. 9-14, at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

For two days of the event Sunday, Jan. 10 and Monday, Jan. 11 the Penn College representatives will conduct cooking demonstrations for eager onlookers.

On Sunday, in the Family Living educational area of the Farm Show Complex, the demonstrations will include molasses-rubbed roasted pork at 1 p.m.; custards savory and desserts at 3 p.m., and vegetable strudel at 6 p.m.

On Monday, the Penn College entourage will be preparing a special breakfast for the Farm Show Board and invited guests. Demonstrations in the Family Living Center will be as follows: blackened catfish at 11 a.m.; wine and appetizer pairing and tasting featuring trout, pork, dairy and poultry paired with Pennsylvania wines, noon; turkey stir fry and bacon-wrapped turkey mignons, 1 p.m.; wine and entree pairing featuring beef, veal, turkey, pork, apples and chocolate, paired with Pennsylvania wines, 2 p.m., and Portabella sandwiches with hummus and tabbouleh at 3 p.m.

Also on Monday in the Pantry Area, Penn College chefs will feature warm Macintosh soup with fruit crisp at 11 a.m. and sauteed Portabella salad at 3 p.m.

Eight students from Penn College's School of Hospitality will be participating in the Farm Show event: Andrew Moat, Great Bend; Kelly Springman, Williamsport; Kim Nalitz, McMurray; Tom Kowalcyk, Bellefonte; Dessa Earle, Troy; Neal Palmer, Canton; Rebecca Miller, Watsontown, and Matthew Milbrand, Northumberland. Hospitality faculty coordinating the event are Judy Shimp, Mary Trometter and Paul Mach, all assistant professors.

In addition to the talents of the Penn College culinary students, the Farm Show will feature architectural models submitted by students in architectural technology under the direction of Dorothy Gerring, assistant professor of architecture. The students' models will be on display in the Family Living area of the complex.
