Eleven Pennsylvania College of Technology students, enrolled in printing and graphic arts-related majors, are winners in a national scholarship competition. The National Scholarship Trust Fund of the Graphic Arts' Board of Directors recently announced the awards. The total amount of monies awarded to the Penn College students is $11,500.
Students enrolled in the printing and publishing technology bachelor's degree major who were selected are: Michael Potemra, Williamsport, $1,500; Tammy Wiggins, Kinzers, $1,000; Scott Fry, Mechanicsburg, $1,000; James Gish, Manheim, $500, and Patrick Kleppinger, Emmaus, $1,000.
Students enrolled in the printing and publishing production associate degree major who were awarded scholarships are: Jennifer Watson, Clarence, $1,200; Muntazir Jaffer, Edison, N.Y., $1,200; and Michell Lynch, York, $1,200.
Those honored in the graphic design bachelor's degree major are: Beth Rozman, Lititz, $1,200; Kristina Hawkins, Catawissa, $1,200, and Christopher Legarski, Roaring Springs, $500.
According to Dr. Daniel G. Wilson, assistant professor of printing and publishing technology at Penn College, the field of approximately 300 scholarship recipients was narrowed from 1,200 applicants. The scholarship monies are targeted to students who plan to work in the printing industry.
Having 11 students from Penn College receiving the national awards speaks highly of the College's printing and graphic design majors, Wilson says.
"There are only three or four printing and publishing technology programs throughout the country that have as many scholarship recipients as we do," he commented. "This reflects the excellence of the printing and publishing technology program at Penn College and the national reputation that we are achieving."
Wilson added that the number of NSTF awards reflects the high level of success that Penn College students are demonstrating in their academics and with attaining internships and opportunities within the printing industry. As well, the professor notes, the NSTF award recipients have their resumes published in a booklet which is distributed nationally to all major printers across the country, thus increasing their chances of being recruited for employment upon graduation.
