The diagnosis is a healthy future for new majors being introduced for Fall 1998 at Pennsylvania College of Technology. A bachelor of science degree in applied health studies and associate of applied science degrees in dietary manager technology and physical fitness specialist join the curriculum this fall.
Applied health studies is a completion program for individuals already certified, licensed or registered in health care professions. It will prepare health-care practitioners to assume positions of leadership and function in a dynamic, modern health care environment. Graduates will be eligible to seek or advance in positions in management, administration or education.
Dietary manager technology couples a strong culinary background with theoretical and clinical education in nutrition and management, to make the graduate a valuable asset to a professional dietary team. Graduates will have the opportunity to apply for Certified Cook status through the American Culinary Federation, as well as the Dietary Manager's Association board examination.
Career opportunities include entry-level positions in health care, schools, health resorts, military, correctional facilities, sports and recreation units, and commercial food service.
Physical fitness specialist prepares graduates to become trained business leaders in the physical fitness industry. Courses stress physical fitness, nutrition, psychology and business.
It is projected that graduates will find jobs in wellness centers, fitness centers, health-care agencies, rehabilitation centers, vacation/resort areas with fitness facilities, and with fitness equipment manufacturing/sales companies. Entrepreneurial activities also are anticipated.
Applied health studies and physical fitness specialist join the majors in Penn College's School of Health Sciences. The dietary manager technology major is part of the School of Hospitality. For more information on the new majors, contact Penn College at (717) 326-3761.
