A number of Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty and staff recently have been in the news for a variety of accomplishments.
Charles Russo, assistant professor of business administration/accounting, recently obtained his Certified Public Accountant license in Pennsylvania. Russo is now a CPA in both Pennsylvania and Florida. He also is a certified management accounting. Russo is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in human resource development at The Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. William H. Sprinksy, associate professor of civil engineering technology, recently delivered a paper titled "Surveying Education in the Nineties: Something Old and Something New" at the American Society for Engineering Education's annual conference in Milwaukee. Dr. Sprinsky also will be delivering a paper, titled "Geographic Information Systems Educating the Civil Engineering User," at the upcoming Third International Symposium on Geographic Information Systems in Higher Education.
Dorothy J. Gerring, assistant professor of architectural technology, presented a paper at the Architectural Research Center Consortium's recent conference in Atlanta. The paper, which was chosen for publication and will be in the conference proceedings, dealt with Gerring's current research on the content of beginning design studios at accredited bachelor of architecture schools in the Northeast United States and Canada.
Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour, vice president for academic affairs and provost/interim chief operating officer, and Sharon Waters, director of Counseling & Career Services, recently made a presentation, entitled "Contracting with Students to Improve Academic Performance An Academic Affairs and Student Services Teach Approach to Advising," to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference of the National Academic Advising Association.
Dr. Richard Sahn, instructor of sociology and psychology, recently published an article in The Resource Book of the Association for Humanist Sociology. The article is entitled "Titillating Students' Imagination with Plausibility Structures: The Contribution of the Sociology of Knowledge." Dr. Sahn also recently attended a Chautauqua National Science Foundation short course, entitled "The Neurobiology of Mind," at Duke University. Admission to the course was selective, based on submission of a paper of intent.
Janet McMahon, assistant professor of practical nursing, has been selected by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to be an examination item writer. McMahon will be submitting questions for licensing examinations given to licensed practical nurse candidates throughout the nation. In September, she represented the Eastern United States at an item-writing and -development panel session in Atlanta. Additionally, McMahon recently earned her master of science degree in nursing from The Pennsylvania State University; her area of focus is adult health.
James T. Gugino, video engineer/editor with Instructional Technology and Media Services, recently worked for World Sports Enterprises as a member of the production crew for the Pocono 500, Busch 400 and Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR auto races. Gugino captured footage, assisted with "live" cameras, and worked with the in-car cameras and wireless communications between the production crew and trackside announcers. Footage Gugino shot was used on ESPN's SportsCenter and races were aired live on TBS, the Superstation.
Lawrence W. Emery Jr., coordinator of New Choices/New Options, was recently recertified by the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. Emery first became certified in 1984 and is now recertified until the year 2002. In order to be recertified, he had to complete at least 100 hours of required coursework and supervision. Additionally, Emery has completed a two-year Family Therapy Training Program through Temple University and Tressler Lutheran Counseling Services, Inc.
