The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education recently reaffirmed its accreditation of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s physical therapist assistant major.

The reaffirmation extends the program’s accreditation for the next 10 years. The reaffirmation is based on a self-study by the college and a visit to campus by CAPTE.

“CAPTE’s reaffirmation of accreditation is an endorsement of the structure and delivery of our PTA curriculum,” said Wendy A. Miller, assistant dean of health sciences. “This decision reflects the tireless efforts of Dr. (Victoria) Hurwitz (director of the physical therapist assistant program) and her team to provide a quality education that meets the highest standards and ensures our graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce as competent physical therapist assistants.”

Christine A. Tilburg, left, clinical director of the physical therapist assistant program at Pennsylvania College of Technology, works with a student to measure range of motion. The program’s accreditation has been reaffirmed for the next 10 years by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.

CAPTE is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. It grants specialized accreditation status to qualified entry-level education programs for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.

In Pennsylvania, to become a licensed physical therapist assistant, a person must graduate from a program that has been accredited by CAPTE.

Penn College offers an associate degree in physical therapist assistant. Hands-on learning takes place in a well-equipped, on-campus laboratory where students practice skills and interventions. In addition, each student completes three clinical education experiences, available with more than 65 diverse organizations offering opportunities in inpatient, outpatient, long-term and specialty care.
