Penn College winter teams all compete

Following the holiday break, all three Pennsylvania College of Technology winter sports teams were back in action last week.

Men’s basketball
In their first-ever meeting, Russell Sage College won 77-64 in the Wildcats’ final nonconference game of the season on Tuesday despite a 25-point effort from Gavin Barrett, of Roselle, New Jersey, and 22 points and 14 rebounds from Livingston Cross, of Union, New Jersey. Russell Sage held a 34-16 edge in fast-break points.

Returning to United East Volt Division play for the first time in over a month, Penn College saw a two-point halftime lead slip away as St. Mary’s (Md.) College used a 19-point second-half advantage for a 79-62 win on Friday. Cross finished with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, while David Brown, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, came off the bench to score 15 points.

Women’s basketball
Penn College reached double figures in just one quarter Tuesday as it fell to Houghton University, 71-27. For the game, the Wildcats hit on just 9 of 46 field goals and 1 of 7 shots from the 3-point arc. Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, led the offense with 11 points.

On the road seeking their first win against St. Mary’s (Md.) College, the Wildcats built an eight-point 47-39 lead with 7:31 remaining in the game, only to see the Seahawks close with a 17-7 run for a 56-54 win on Friday. Teats ended with 15 points for Penn College, pushing her career total to 713, while Mia Patterson, of Loyalsock Township, chipped in with 13 points and Emily Pardee, of Williamsport, pulled down 17 rebounds.

Wrestling
Six of 17 Penn College wrestlers placed among the top six and the Wildcats – ranked 24th in the most recent NWCA Division III Tournament Team Rankings – finished fifth in an eight-team field on Saturday in their own invitational.

Luke Heimbach, of Boyertown at 125 pounds, went 2-2 and Kaden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut (133), went 2-1 with a medical forfeit in the third-place match, to both finish fourth; Patrick Snoke, of Northampton (141), and Travis Green, of Manchester, Maryland (165), both went 4-1 and Gabriel Kennedy-Citeroni, of Blairsville (197), went 3-1 as all three finished fifth; and TJ Martin, of Honesdale (149), went 3-2 and finished sixth.

Averett (with four individual champions) and Delaware Valley (with three champs) tied for first in the team standings with 136 points and were followed by Lycoming 103 (with two champs), Muhlenberg 93.5, Penn College 79.5, Castleton 66 (with one champ), Scranton 50 and Elmira College 28.5. Of the teams in the field, Muhlenberg is ranked 17th in the current D-III Tournament Team Rankings.

ON THE HORIZON
United East Conference – On July 1, Penn State Brandywine in Media will join the conference, bringing its core members to 18. Penn College previously competed against PS Brandywine when both were members of the Penn State University Athletic Conference and United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
