Pennsylvania College of Technology held its last commencement ceremony of 2023 on Dec. 16, an occasion marked by comfort and joy – both inside the Community Arts Center and out.

The student speaker was Samir Khalid Pringle, of Philadelphia, who earned an associate degree in business management and received the President's Award for leadership and service. Pringle, who will return to campus in the spring in pursuit of a bachelor's in business administration, was among 350 students eligible to graduate at the end of the fall semester.

Also speaking was Distinguished Alumni Award winner Jim Riedel, an alumnus in automotive technology (2006) and automotive technology management (2007), who is national product training manager for Subaru of America Inc.

President Michael J. Reed was joined by state Sen. Gene Yaw, who also serves as chairman of the college’s Board of Directors, in conferring degrees and certificates upon the latest graduates.

Prior to the ceremony, Jay K. Patel enjoys a photo op with Heidi E. Roupp, disability and access resources specialist and his American Sign Language interpreter for two and a half years. Patel received the Board of Directors’ Award and degrees in manufacturing engineering technology and automated manufacturing technology.

"There's not anyone in this world that can author your story for you," Pringle told his graduating classmates. "Not parents, other family members or your friends. While they could have influence on your life decisions, ultimately, it’s your decision to make. So if you don’t take anything else from this speech, always remember: You’re the author of your story."

The alumni honoree regales the audience with a conversation about his Penn College days and the importance of mentoring. "I’ve learned ... that the further you want to go, the harder it is to go alone, Riedel said, earnestly urging the graduates to stay connected and foster future generations of Wildcats. "Actually, it’s impossible. Success requires teamwork. Great teamwork needs great leadership. And great leaders likely learned from the mentors in their lives."
