Club delivers 'smash' hit to help with pre-finals tension

    In what could unsurprisingly become quite a popular event as Finals Week anxiety ramps up each semester, the ConCreate Design Club held its first "Smash House and Grill Out" just off the Carl Building Technologies Center parking lot from noon-5 p.m. Thursday. 

    For a $5 donation, patrons could get a hot dog and one minute to smash or throw the lab leftovers of their choosing. Among those yearend items were steps that could be smashed for prizes if wire mesh, rebar or a hammer were uncovered within.

    First in line to grab a hammer and assist the student effort was Ellyn A. Lester, assistant dean of construction and architectural technologies ...
    ... followed shortly thereafter by Garret L. Graff, assistant professor of building construction technology, who also sent the concrete chunks flying. Graff was one of several faculty members who dropped by to support the five-hour fundraiser.
    Behind a welcoming firepit and a concrete bench repainted to resemble the main course, Corbin R. Moore, of Manheim, prepares to serve a fresh-from-the-grill hot dog to a fellow student. Moore, a residential construction technology & management student, is president of the Penn College Construction Association; at center is Sam K. Brost, a building construction technology student from Big Flats, N.Y., and president of the ConCreate Design Club.
    Taking a hefty bite out of a table (not to mention a healthy helping of pre-finals stress relief) is Hunter S. Altmeyer, of Bethel Park, enrolled in concrete science technology.
