Concrete classes transforming Vic House sidewalks

    Instructor Joseph F. DiBucci's Concrete Construction class converged Thursday on The Victorian House, itself a student undertaking more than a quarter-century ago, for a sidewalk improvement project.

    Aided by Penn College General Services, the crew poured concrete that will be stenciled and colored to look like brickwork; students also will widen the base of the site's dandelion fountain so that less water is lost from the circulating spray.

    Joel D. Steppe, General Services' assistant horticulturist/grounds and motorpool manager, delivers another bucketload of concrete to keep the group on task.
    As students wield floats and a screed board, DiBucci (in blue shirt) supervises the busy crew.
    "Sidewalk superintendents" from the Dunham Children's Learning Center ensure quality control by keeping a close collective eye on the project.
    Forms outline a future pour that will connect to the contribution of an earlier class, taught by building construction technology instructor Franklin H. Reber Jr.
