Penn College women’s tennis in historic wins

In a historic week for the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s tennis team, the Wildcats posted first-ever program wins over two longtime opponents.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Penn College opened its season with a 6-3 win over Susquehanna University on Wednesday as Lauren Peck, of South Williamsport; Faith Murray, of Dillsburg; and Georgia Macensky, of Wellsboro, all won both their singles and doubles matches in David Straub’s coaching debut.

The victory marked the first for the Wildcats after seven lifetime losses to Susquehanna and it marked the first time they captured more than one win in a match.

“The girls gave very good efforts. I’m very proud of the whole team,” Straub said.

On Saturday, the Wildcat women made it two wins in a row with their 7-2 victory over crosstown rival Lycoming College that snapped a 10-match loss streak. Winning both their singles and doubles matches were Ellen Buckley, of Binghamton, New York, at No. 1 singles and doubles; Peck at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles; Jordan Specht, of Frederick, Maryland, at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles; and Sofia Caspina, of South Williamsport, at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Prior to the win, Penn College players never had won more than four matches in any meeting against the Warriors.

MEN’S TENNIS
At Lycoming College on Saturday, the Wildcats lost, 7-2, with Alex Norris, of Williamsport, at No. 1 singles, and Matt Williams, of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, at No. 2 singles, posting wins.

GOLF
Junior Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, shot 5-over-par 75 on the 6,502-yard Philmont Country Club North Course to top the 43-player field and lead the Penn College men’s golf team to 327 total and a first-place finish in the United East Preview on Tuesday.

Hosting the inaugural D-III Northeast Elite on Saturday and Sunday at Williamsport Country Club, Penn College finished third among 11 teams – six of them reigning conference champions. Individually, Mussina placed second in a field of 58 golfers.

Mussina shot rounds of 71-72–143 on the 6,516-yard, par 71 WCC course, while for the Penn College B team, Sam Wetmiller, of Selinsgrove, shot 80-79–159 to finish tied for 29th.

“It was the first tournament for those (B) guys. I am pleased. Sam is working his way into the starting lineup,” coach Rob Lytle said.

MEN’S SOCCER
After leading 2-1 at the half, Penn College allowed two second-half goals in a 3-2 nonconference loss to King’s College on Wednesday that snapped its four-match win streak.

In UE play at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, the teams fought to a 2-2 draw.

For their play Sept. 17-23, juniors Tommy DeGeyter, of Long Valley, New Jersey, a defensive midfielder, and goalkeeper Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, were named United East Volt Division Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Morgan Solano, of Shavertown, was perfect in goal with five saves and eight of her teammates found the back of the net – with Wiley Egan, of Northumberland, scoring twice – in a 9-0 UE rout of Clarks Summit University on Monday.

At Keystone College in nonconference play on Wednesday, Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scored twice in a 3-0 win. Penn College’s defense held Keystone to no shots on goal as Solano earned her second straight shutout as the Wildcats extended their season-opening unbeaten string to 11.

On Saturday in UE play at Penn State Harrisburg, the Wildcats lost their first match of the season, 1-0. Harrisburg led in shots on goal, 8-1, as Penn College goalie Nichole Lichtinger, of Erie, made seven stops.

For her play Sept. 17-23, junior goalkeeper Lichtinger was named the United East Volt Division Defensive Player of the Week.
