Penn College has impressive week

Pennsylvania College of Technology teams and individuals in several fall sports had impressive outings over the past week:

Men’s/women’s cross-country
On Saturday at the United East Preview, the men’s team posted its first victory since Oct. 13, 2017, as it scored 41 points to top an 11-team field. Its last conference championship came in 2012 when it was a member of the Penn State University Athletic Conference, capping a 10-year championship run. Also, on Saturday, the women’s squad was sixth of nine teams.

Mitchell Campbell, of Riegelsville, led the men with a fourth-place individual finish in 29:08 over an 8K course and freshman Elaina Brady, of Big Cove Tannery, finished 13th in 33:22 over a 6K course to lead the women.

“Our entire men’s top seven ran well on a challenging course. They grouped together well. It was a quality midseason effort,” second-year coach Tom Leeser said.

Women’s soccer
At first-time opponent Cairn University on Wednesday, Penn College scored a 4-1 win with Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scoring twice and assisting on another goal. Goalie Nicole Lichtinger, of Erie, stopped three of four Cairn shots on goal.

On the road at Alfred State College on Saturday, Sheetz scored three times and BillieGene Hennessey, of Holtsville, New York, added two goals in a 6-1 rout. Penn College led in shots on goal, 11-4, and Lichtinger made three saves for the win.

Hosting new foe Marymount University on Sunday, the teams fought to a scoreless draw as Penn College remained unbeaten. Marymount led in shots on goal, 6-2. Morgan Solano, of Shavertown, was perfect in goal for the Wildcats.

Men’s soccer
Hosting first-time opponent St. Vincent College on Saturday, Tommy DeGeyter, of Long Valley, New Jersey, scored on a penalty kick in the 55th minute to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 win. Teammate Mason Beaver, of Selinsgrove, tied the match in the 32nd minute. Each team had three shots on goal. Wildcat goalie Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, made two saves.

Golf
Shooting a career-best 69 and tying for second, Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, led Penn College to a 306 team score and third-place finish in a field of 12 in the season-opener on Tuesday at the Elizabethtown College Fall Invitational at Hershey Country Club. A year ago, in the same event, Penn College was eighth of 12 teams after shooting a 339. Mussina shot 34-35 on the George Fazio-designed par 71, 7,115-yard East Course.

Over the weekend in the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic, Mussina, a junior, medaled after rounds of 70-73–143 on the Summit Country Club and Sinking Valley Country Club courses, and the Wildcats finished third among 15 teams in the two-day event.

Women’s volleyball
In recording their third consecutive win for the first time since the 2014 season, the Wildcats posted their first victory in three meetings against Mount Aloysius College, 3-1, on Monday. It also marked the team’s first three-win season since 2017. Statistical leaders were Marianna Dariychuk, of Leola, with 16 kills and 14 digs; Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, with six aces and 28 assists; and Lauren Hergert, of Brookville, with six blocks.

At Elmira College on Friday, the team’s win streak ended with a hard-fought 3-0 loss. Penn College leaders were Coryn Oswald, of Langhorne, with nine kills; Stein with six aces and 22 assists; Hergert with four blocks and Dariychuk with 12 digs.

Men’s tennis
Alex Norris, of Williamsport, playing at No. 1 men’s singles, reached Sunday’s semifinal in the King’s College Invitational and finished the two-day event with a 1-1 record.

Penn College lost its remaining first-round five singles and three doubles matches, and coach David Straub noted after the season-opener,  “Nerves came into play and I got to watch them for the first time under that kind of competition. With experience, they will get better.”
