Penn College fall sports openers have mixed results

On the first weekend of the fall sports season, Pennsylvania College of Technology teams not only tasted action for the first time but found varying levels of team and individual success in the process.

Men’s soccer
In their season opener on Friday, the Wildcats got second-half goals from Brandon Ratjavong, of Gordonville, and Hunter Gabloff, of Succasunna, New Jersey, along with an outstanding defense that limited Keystone College to just two shots – none on goal – in a 2-0 shutout win. The victory was Penn College’s first against Keystone after going 0-5-1 in their previous six meetings.

At McDaniel College on Sunday, McDaniel scored the lone goal in the 60th minute as Penn College went to 1-1-0 on the early season. McDaniel led in shots on goal, 7-3, with Penn College goalie Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, turning back six.

Women’s soccer
At Mount Aloysius College on Friday, Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, scored twice in the first half of a 2-2 tie. Both teams had nine shots on goal. Wildcats’ goalkeeper Nicole Lichtinger, of Erie, made seven saves.

Talk about efficiency: Back in action on Saturday at Geneva College, Penn College had just two shots on goal compared to Geneva’s eight, but Sheetz connected in the 85th minute to force a 1-1 tie. In goal for the Wildcats, Morgan Solano, of Shavertown, made seven saves.

Women’s volleyball
In a 3-1 season-opening loss at King’s College on Friday, Marianna Dariychuk, of Leola, led the Wildcats with 13 kills; Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, topped the team with four service aces and 31 assists; and Anna Reed, of Fawn Grove, had 19 digs.

On Saturday in a tri-match at Delaware Valley University, Penn College lost to Penn State York, 3-1, and to the host team, 3-0.

Against York, Coryn Oswald, of Langhorne, had 10 kills, Stein had 22 assists and 16 digs.

Against DV, Oswald led with 13 kills, Stein had 14 assists and Dariychuk had 13 digs.

Men’s/women’s cross-country
The Penn College’s men’s team, led by the 18th-place finish of Mitchell Campbell, of Riegelsville, placed sixth in a 12-team field in its season opener on Friday at the Misericordia University Invitational. Campbell, in a field of 120, turned in a time of 13:22 over a 4K course.

Although one runner short of fielding a full team, Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, topped the Wildcat women over the 4K distance in 19:28 to finish 78th in a 113-runner field.
