Hypertherm, a manufacturer of plasma, laser and waterjet cutting systems used in industries like shipbuilding, manufacturing and automotive repair, is extending by two years an agreement that entrusts equipment to Pennsylvania College of Technology’s welding program.
The college will continue to have the use of four Hypertherm Powermax105 SYNC® plasma system units and six Hypertherm Powermax65 SYNC® plasma system units for two more years. The company, which was founded in 1968 and has more than 1,300 associates worldwide, also provided educational software to the college in 2015.
The entrusted Hypertherm equipment is used for cutting materials such as aluminum, stainless, and carbon or mild steel. In addition, the units are able to gouge metal, which is helpful for removing old welds. The units use an electric arc to atomize compressed air, which causes the plasma arc that is used to either cut or gouge the material.
The units are used in the welding curriculum for everything from beveling pipe to cutting one-eighth inch plate. The equipment is also used during welding competitions hosted by Penn College, which extends access to other schools, as well. Hypertherm has also provided prizes for these competitions. In addition, the company provides technical support to the college, as needed.

Hypertherm has partnered with Penn College since 2015. This latest support, with a total value of more than $50,000, moves the company to the Visionary Society ($100,000-$499,999) on the college’s Donor Wall.
