Penn College athletes have busy, productive weekend

Sunday, April 3, 2022

During a week that – due to weather-related postponements – nearly all of the action took place over the weekend, Pennsylvania College of Technology teams found success in baseball, softball and men’s lacrosse.

Baseball
Hosting Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday in United East play, a two-out single to center in the bottom of the seventh inning by Jake Wagner, of Palmyra, drove in the winning run in a 2-1 first-game Wildcats victory. On the mound for Penn College, Samuel Zeigler, of Palmyra, went the distance for his fourth win without a loss. Zeigler struck out eight and walked three. In the nightcap, Harrisburg rebounded with a 5-2 win that left the Wildcats 10-10 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Brian Robison, of Quakertown, had two of the Wildcats’ five hits. Starting Penn College pitcher Ben Bretzman, of Bendersville, went 6⅓ innings and took the loss.

United East standings through Saturday: Lancaster Bible College, 8-1; Penn State Harrisburg, 7-1; Penn State Abington, 6-4; Penn College, 4-3; St. Mary’s (Md.), 3-5; Penn State Berks, 3-7; Wells College, 2-6; Gallaudet University, 1-7.

Softball
Hosting Penn State Berks in UE play on Saturday, the Wildcats split, losing the opener 1-0 and winning the second game, 10-2 in five innings, to go to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. In a first-game pitcher’s duel, Berks pushed across the game’s lone run in the sixth inning, giving the mound win to Briana Smith, who fanned nine and walked one while allowing just four hits. Wildcat Kyla Benner, of Bethlehem, who struck out four and walked one in a six-hit effort, took the loss. In the second game, four-run third and fifth innings propelled the victory. In the third, Maddie Hurst, of Mechanicsburg, had a two-run double, and in the fifth, Madison Shaffer, of Trout Run, and Olivia Hemstock, of Northford, Connecticut, each had two-run singles to help Mackenzie Weaver, of Williamsport, to her fourth win in six decisions on the mound. Weaver struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. Hemstock ended the game with two hits and three RBIs.
