Penn College teams have mixed week

Sunday, March 27, 2022

Mother Nature displayed both her nice side (pleasant temperatures and sunshine for the golf team) and not-so-nice side (wind, rain and snow squalls that caused postponements in baseball and tennis) to Pennsylvania College of Technology spring sports teams last week. And despite less than ideal conditions, the softball team opened United East play with back-to-back doubleheader sweeps.

Golf
In their season opener on Monday, Penn College golfers totaled 354 and finished fifth in a 10-team field at the Lebanon Valley College Spring Invitational. Wildcat Will Orwig, of Mifflintown, shot an 84 and tied for ninth on the 6,562-yard, par 72 Lebanon Valley Country Club course. Also for Penn College, Alex Acree, of Brookville, shot an 88 and tied for 18th; Trevor Keaton, of Worcester, shot an 89 and tied for 23rd; Gavin Baer, of Bainbridge, shot a 93 and tied for 32nd; and Sean McNamara, of Lancaster, shot a 95 and was 35th. Hood College took top team honors with a 332 while Jared Christmann, of Neumann University, and Brady Leonard, of Hood College, each fired 75s to share first place among 52 individuals.

Softball
Playing for the first time in nearly two weeks on Tuesday, the Wildcats dropped a nonconference twin bill at Susquehanna University, 6-2 and 8-0, in six innings. In the first game, Penn College was held to two singles and Susquehanna held the upper hand in the second game, as well, limiting the Wildcats to one hit as 12 Penn College players struck out. For the day, Maddie Hurst, of Mechanicsburg, had two of her team’s three hits.

Opening its United East schedule at Lancaster Bible College on Friday, Penn College won both games, by scores of 2-1 and 10-4, to improve to 6-5 overall. In the opener, Jordan Specht, of Frederick, Maryland, drove in the winning run with a fifth-inning triple that scored Hurst, who went 4 for 4 and scored twice. On the mound for the Wildcats, Mackenzie Weaver, of Williamsport, evened her record at 2-2 with a nine-strikeout, two-walk, three-hitter. In the nightcap, Penn College had a five-run third inning and four-run sixth for its sweep. In the third frame, Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, had a three-run double. Splain plated another run in the sixth, and Hailey DeBrody, of Cogan Station, had a two-run homer that inning. Pitcher Kyla Benner, of Bethlehem, fanned seven and didn’t allow a walk while improving to 4-2.

Back in UE action on Saturday at Gallaudet University, the Wildcats unloaded – winning by scores of 12-0, behind the combined one-hitter by Weaver and Taylor Cashner, of Danville, and 20-2 – to improve to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference. In the first game, Specht went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Olivia Hemstock, of Northford, Connecticut, went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as Weaver improved to 4-2, striking out four in four innings and walking none. In the second game, Penn College set the tone with an 11-run first inning. Hemstock went 4 for 4 in the game with six RBIs and four runs scored, DeBrody went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Specht went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to highlight an 18-hit attack. Benner improved to 5-2 on the mound with a seven-strikeout, one-walk performance.

Baseball
In nonconference play at Wilkes University last Monday, Penn College lost, 6-2, despite a 7-6 edge in hits. Jacob Carles, of Bernville, had three of the Wildcats’ hits. Starting pitcher Zach Ellis, of Gilbertsville, went four innings and took the mound loss.

After home UE postponements against Gallaudet University on Friday and Saturday, the Wildcats traveled to Gallaudet on Sunday and won, 8-5 and 16-0, to go to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the conference. In the opener, Penn College used a three-run fifth and five-run seventh to overcome an early 4-0 deficit. Brian Robison, of Quakertown, had two doubles and drove in two runs while Shane Price, of Kersey, also plated two runs and helped make a winner of relief pitcher Chance Webb, of Hughesville, who went the last 4 1/3 innings. In the second game, Wildcats starting pitcher Ben Bretzman, of Bendersville, went six innings and reliever Samuel Zeigler, of Palmyra, went the final three – each allowing just one hit in combining on the shutout. Bretzman fanned seven and Zeigler struck out four. On offense for Penn College, Price went 4 for 5 with three runs scored while Cameron Dick, of Dillsburg, and Tyler Rudolph, of Hemlock, New York, each drove in two runs.

Men’s lacrosse
Hosting SUNY Morrisville in its UE opener on Friday, the Wildcats fell, 10-6, and dropped to 4-5 overall. Goals by James Thatcher, of Bala Cynwyd, and Quinn Caviola, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, gave Penn College leads twice in the opening period before Morrisville tied the score and then pulled away with a four-goal second quarter. Thatcher led the Wildcats with two goals and two assists. Morrisville led in shots, 45-37, and in shots on goal, 21-18. When the teams met last season, Morrisville won by scores of 10-2 and 17-1.
