Virtual shopping helps local fight against hunger

This semester’s Penn College ceramics students missed out on making bowls for Williamsport’s annual Soup and a Bowl event, an important fundraiser for the Central PA Food Bank. The campus community can help those students leave their legacy, however, by filling a virtual empty bowl with an online shopping trip to the food bank by May 8.
"The coronavirus pandemic has already had far-reaching consequences that will likely be exacerbated in the coming weeks and months. Many people in our area will be severely impacted by missed work, increased childcare expenses, and medical bills," said David A. Stabley, instructor of ceramics and wood sculpture. "The Central PA Food Bank will be facing a sharp increase in demand for their services, and this is a great opportunity for us to help."
He and Deborah L. Stabley, part-time instructor of ceramics, have blended the bowl-making tradition into their coursework for nearly a decade.
Given the current directive for social distancing, a virtual food drive is the perfect way to give.
Simply click and drag a product off the shelf, scan it with the virtual cash register, and check out to donate. An online drive also enables the Food Bank to obtain and distribute the most-needed healthy and nutritious food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and center-of-the-plate protein.
