Artist Celebrates Mythical, Magical Routes to Connectedness

The artist is framed by her whimsical creations.The exhibit adds a welcome burst of color to the long-awaited spring day just outside the gallery window.Collected in a corner behind clay curiosities, students jot notes for class assignments related to the artwork.Explaining her process to an attentive audienceInspired by a desire to connect with her late father, Rubin is drawn to cone-shaped contraptions that help us communicate – often simultaneously and sometimes even subconsciously – with one another.Neverwhere and Nowhere," an exhibit by Chicago-born artist Tammie Rubin, continues through May 4 in The Gallery at Penn College. On the third floor of Madigan Library, the gallery hosted an opening reception Thursday evening at which patrons met the artist and enjoyed her fanciful work. Hours for the exhibit are 1-4 p.m. Sundays, 2-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Friday. The gallery, which is not open Saturdays and Mondays, will also be closed April 18-20.
