Latest Gallery Show Shines Light Into Fairy Tales' Shadowy World

"A Darkness" welcomes gallery visitors into "the split between seen and unseen, reality and myth, waking and dreaming" – a collage of fantasy and reality. Artists Patrick Vincent and Lauren Kinney address the large crowd gathered for the opening of their exhibit in The Gallery at Penn College. Students view a large-scale woodcut work by Kinney, who uses hidden pictures, symbols and patterns to weave imagery into narrative.Other students enjoy donning screen-printed masks created by Vincent and taking photos for uploading to the artist's Twin Bee Press website (www.twinbeepress.com).Exploring animal figures in folk tale, Vincent's work, "Ophite Tautology," carved MDF (medium density fiberboard), relief and letterpress-printed handmade paper, crawls across the gallery wall. A Darkness,” a dreamlike display of woodcarving and printmaking, opened Tuesday with a reception and artists' talk in The Gallery at Penn College. The free, public exhibit – which features the intricate and imaginative work of Lauren Kinney and Patrick Vincent – continues through Nov. 10 on the third floor of Madigan Library. Hours are 1-4 p.m. Sunday, 2-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday (closed Saturday and Monday).
