Gallery at Penn College to Showcase Lancaster Artist Shalya Marsh
Friday, January 8, 2010
The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host "Cipher," a collection of ceramic works by Shalya Marsh, from Jan. 9 to Feb 9.
Marsh's work, through the use of decipherable codes and symbols, expresses the intrinsic limitation that language places on communication. Her hand-built ceramic sculptures reference illuminated manuscripts, ancient cuneiforms and primitive accounting systems known as tokens.
These archaic systems of recording information are juxtaposed with modern codes and ciphers such as binary, substitution and Morse. The viewer is invited to decode the pieces' nonsensical pangrams and whimsical definitions.
Marsh attended the State University of New York at New Paltz, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics. She teaches ceramics at the Lancaster Museum of Art and at La Academia Partnership Charter School.
Her work has been exhibited regionally and nationally, including exhibitions at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery at Harrisburg Area Community College, Maryland Institute College of Art's Fox Gallery, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place in the gallery from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19. Marsh will offer an artist's lecture at 4 p.m. in the first-floor Presentation Room of the Student and Administrative Services Center, followed by a 5:30 p.m. talk in the gallery.
Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 2 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
