Penn College Spring Golf Classic to Feature Bob Charles

Bob CharlesRenowned golfer Bob Charles will be the visiting pro at the Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation's 22nd Annual Spring Golf Classic on May 5 at the Williamsport Country Club.

Net proceeds from the event will benefit the Penn College Foundation Golf Classic Scholarship. Since its inception in 1987, the Golf Classic has secured funds for Penn College Foundation's Scholarship Aid Program. The Foundation has provided more than $289,000 in Golf Classic scholarships to eligible students since 1990.

Charles, a New Zealand native, worked in the banking industry for six years before embarking on a golfing career. The left-hander's six PGA Tour victories are the Houston Classic and the British Open Championship in 1963; the Tucson Open Invitational in 1965, the Atlanta Classic in 1967, the Canadian Open in 1968 and the Greater Greensboro Open in 1974.

He won 23 times on the Champions Tour from 1987-96, and he has numerous international victories, including the Senior British Open in 1993. He was the fifth recipient of the European Seniors Tour's Lladro Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He has designed two 18-hole resort golf courses and a nine-hole course in New Zealand.

Charles was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 1972 and advanced to Commander of the British Empire in 1992. In 1999, he was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
