Penn College Opens Doors to Future Students, Alumni, Community

Prospective students and their families, alumni and visitors will be able to see what Pennsylvania's premier technical college has to offer when Pennsylvania College of Technology presents Open House 2002 on Sunday, March 17.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the main campus, the Lumley Aviation Center at the Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville, the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood and the Advanced Automotive Technology Center on Wahoo Drive in Williamsport.



Prospective students and their families can attend general information sessions, tour the campus with a Student Ambassador, review housing options, visit faculty and students in their area of interest, attend sessions for help in choosing a major and learn more about student life and campus activities.

Alumni will have an opportunity to meet with Penn College President Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour for an informal reception in the College Library from 2 to 3 p.m.

And, the event will feature a literal "icebreaker" Visiting Chef Travis Dale of the Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind., an award-winning ice-carver who helped to create elaborate displays exhibited in the opening ceremonies of the recent Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, will be on hand to present two ice-carving demonstrations in Bardo Gymnasium.

Dale, who will prepare a gala fund-raising dinner for more than 100 guests on the evening before Open House, will present a single-block demonstration at 11 a.m., followed by a multiple-block demonstration at 1 p.m.

For those planning to enroll in Fall 2002, general information sessions will be offered at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Penn's Inn at the Bush Campus Center. For those planning to enroll in 2003 or later, sessions will be offered at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. at the Klump Academic Center Auditorium.

Tours of the campus will leave immediately after the information sessions, departing the Campus Center at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and the Academic Center at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Overviews of the programs offered by the eight academic schools at Penn College Business and Computer Technologies, Industrial and Engineering Technologies, Construction and Design Technologies, Integrated Studies, Health Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Hospitality, and Transportation Technology will be presented in Bardo Gymnasium. Penn College offers bachelor- and associate-degree and certificate majors representing more than 100 career fields.

Career-exploration workshops and a computerized career-guidance program will be offered by the Counseling and Career Services Office on the second floor of the Campus Center. Representatives from Academic Support Services will be available on the first floor/east wing of the Academic Center. Students may also visit the Tutoring Center in Room 145 of the Academic Center. Disability Services will offer a workshop on the first floor of the Academic Center from 1 to 2 p.m. Students who want to learn more about placement tests can visit the Advisement Center in Room 150 of the Learning Resources Center.

On-campus housing presentations will be offered in the Hager Lifelong Education Center, Room A121, beginning at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tours of The Village at Penn College, Campus View Apartments and College West Apartments will be offered throughout the day. In addition, off-campus landlords will be in the Field House to discuss housing available in the local community.

Admissions staff will be available to assist students and families in Room 104 of the Academic Center. A session on the types of financial aid available to Penn College students and their families will be presented at 2:30 p.m. in the Academic Center Auditorium.

Alumni activities will be headquartered at the College Library, located in the Learning Resources Center. Alumni registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bush Campus Center and from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Academic Center. Alumni will also be welcomed at the Earth Science Center from noon to 3 p.m.

At the Earth Science Center, visitors can watch high schools and vocational-technical schools from the Northeast compete in the annual Heavy Equipment Rodeo, sponsored by the Service and Operation of Heavy Equipment Club. Forestry Club members will open their Woodsman Team practice for the public as well, allowing visitors to observe events like horizontal speed chop, crosscut saw, chain saw, pulp toss, ax throw, log roll, bolt split and bow saw. Visitors may also tour the greenhouse, see interiorscape design and house-plant displays and purchase plants from the Horticulture Club.

At the Advanced Automotive Technology Center, the Penn College Motorsports Association will display race- and high-performance vehicle components and demonstrate a chassis dynamometer with a high-performance car.

Food and beverages will be available for sale at a variety of facilities around campus, including the Susquehanna Room and Penn Central in the Lifelong Education Center; the Bistro, the CoffeeHouse and Wildcat Express in the Campus Center; the International Cafe in the Academic Center; and Nature's Cove at the Earth Science Center.

A variety of student organizations will also offer food and drinks for sale on the first and second floors of the atrium in the Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center.

In addition, Chef Paul Mach and Tom Speicher, hosts of "You're the Chef," the College's popular TV series seen nationwide on public television, will offer demonstrations, food, prizes and souvenirs in Room B132 of the Lifelong Education Center at noon and 2 p.m.

Shuttle transportation will be provided to and from the Earth Science Center and the Aviation Center during the day.

Free bus transportation also will be available to the main campus from the Lancaster-Harrisburg and Altoona-State College areas. Seats must be reserved by March 8.
