Open House 2000 at North Campus Highlights Career Opportunities in Variety of Fields

Combine useful information about hobbies and careers with an array of activities for the entire family and you have the blueprint for a day of fun and learning at Open House 2000 on Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus .
"Hobby Day and Career Expo: New Opportunities for the New Millennium" will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the North Campus, located on Route 6 between Wellsboro and Mansfield.
Working in conjunction with Penn College's eight academic schools, the event enables people to see how hobbies and personal interests can lead to rewarding careers, said Dr. Ted Nichols, assistant dean for the North Campus.
"This event gives the public the opportunity to have fun and become better acquainted with Penn College, using hobbies as a medium," Nichols said.
From 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., "Conversations in the Commons" will feature informational sessions about career opportunities in Automotive Service, Aviation, Business, Human Services, Construction, Computer Information Systems, Floral Design/Interior Plantscaping, Health Sciences, Hospitality and Technology-Based Marketing.
Other sessions include New Choices/New Options: Opportunities for Career Exploration and Training; Careers and Volunteer Opportunities with the American Cancer Society or the Tioga County Cancer Coalition; Volunteering With Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Opportunities for Paid Volunteering with VISTA; and Helping the Handicapped With Personal Ponies.
The sessions will be led by Penn College alumni, faculty and friends.
"Penn College and You" sessions from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. will offer
details about Penn College programs, admissions and financial aid. Refreshments will be provided.
Distance learning opportunities will be presented at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Videoconferencing Room (Room 112). Career and hobby displays can be viewed in Room 108.
In Room 115 (the Computer Lab), there will be 20-minute sessions on Penn College on PowerPoint, followed by opportunities for personal instruction on computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Sessions start at 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 and 2:30 p.m.
In Room 117, ongoing computer displays will include Visit Penn College on the Web; Learn About New Choices/New Options Career Workshops; Explore a Computer Career Exploration Program; and Introduction to Desktop Publishing.
In the Main Hall, faculty, staff and students will meet individually with anyone wishing to discuss educational and career goals. An alumni display will be offered there as well.
A variety of activities will be held in the North Campus Library all day, including e-trading and investments and how to take advantage of public access communication/learning stations at sites around Tioga County.
The Tioga County Ham Radio Club will sponsor displays and discussions in Room 110. Other activities include DirtMasters remote-control cars on the East Lawn, and "Personal Ponies" on the Rear Lawn, featuring the opportunity to pet miniature horses and have photographs taken.
"Stump Jumpers," a model-airplane display, will be presented on the North Campus Commons. A Civil War artillery battery re-enactment and training will take place on the Front Lawn.
Door prizes, contests and special activities for children will be provided.
