" I like being able to help people when they need it the most."
Stephanie Beck
Always in search of fresh ways to gain experience in the medical field, Stephanie was instantly attracted to the EMT Pre-Apprenticeship program at Penn College. Her experience in the fully funded 16-week program not only prepared her for a part-time EMT position, she also earned clinical hours needed for her nursing degree.
TAKING THE LEAD
Q&A with Stephanie
WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN EMT?
I have always wanted to do something that would make a difference and help others. Doing this let me be able to do that. I can help anyone when they may need it.
WY DID YOU CHOOSE THE EMT PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
I needed clinical hours for school and this program gave me clinical experience for my future career. I’m still in school, and am working for Susquehanna Regional EMS as a per diem EMT.
TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING COOL/FASCINATING YOU LEARNED?
I thought all of the skills we learned were fascinating because typically two people are on scene and can do everything they need to with only the equipment that is stored on the ambulance.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE PROGRAM?
My favorite aspect of the program was the ride-alongs. During these we were able to see what a typical day in EMS is like, and we were also able to use our skills.
WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL OTHERS WHO ARE CONSIDERING THE PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
I would tell them if they have any interest at all to apply. You do not have to know everything when you apply because everyone is willing to teach you what you need to know.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON YOUR EXPEREINCE?
This was an amazing opportunity that I am glad I was given the chance to do. I did not know anything about EMS before I started, and I was able to learn everything I needed to know. I am also still learning and all of instructors and staff are always welcoming and will answer any questions you might have.
