Q&A with Spanco

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE INDUSTRY YOU SERVE?

We take pride in our mission of contributing to work safety across the globe by manufacturing lifting and fall protection solutions for our customers.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT YOUR COMPANY'S CULTURE/MISSION?

At Spanco, our employees are our number-one asset and we take pride in treating them as well as our customers. We have a proven track record of providing career paths for our employees and promoting from within.

HOW DID YOUR COMPANY FIRST CONNECT WITH PENN COLLEGE?

Our Executive Vice President of Operations, Shawn Trexler, met Mike Allen, a welding department head, at Fabtech in Chicago. Mike put him in touch with the machining technology faculty because it's difficult to find skilled CNC machinists. In addition, Shawn's neighbors have a son who is currently attending Penn College in an electrical program and doing an internship with us. Shawn met with Howard Troup in November of 2023 and spoke to one of his classes about work life after graduation. It was received very well and we now have a grad, Elias Brendle, working for us.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PENN COLLEGE IS A SOUND INVESTMENT? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RETURN?

Penn College has a state-of-the-art facility and invests in highly skilled trade training. As an employer, we have a need to hire graduates from these skilled trades. Currently, we have one Penn College graduate working for us and another one doing an internship.

WHAT QUALITITES DO YOU VALUE MOST WHEN RECRUITING PENN COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ALUMNI?

Penn College students have a vast knowledge base after graduation, which eliminates our need to do lengthy on-the-job training. Penn College students have real-world experience and skills that could span many departments in our environment. The instructors have manufacturing experience, which they share with their students.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERING PENN COLLEGE?

If a student is interested in the trades, Penn College, in our opinion, is the number-one school in this part of the country. You will get a very practical and useful education for a reasonable cost and most assuredly have multiple job offers after graduation.

Industry Connections

“Our industry cannot progress and grow without the highly skilled graduates of Penn College.”
