"Scholarships have given me the freedom to focus on learning and gaining experience without constant financial stress. It’s been essential in helping me prepare for my career. I recently met the Roan Family who established a scholarship that I was fortunate to receive. It was a great experience and I truly appreciate their support. It’s encouraging to know that there are people who believe in what I’m working toward. This inspires me to work harder every day to achieve my goals."

Q&A with Saudiah
HOW DOES THE HORTICULTURE INDUSTRY INSPIRE YOU?
The horticulture industry is all about growth—of plants, spaces, and communities. It’s rewarding to work with nature in ways that are creative, sustainable, and impactful.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS?
Plant Production has been my favorite because it connects classroom learning to hands-on application. I love seeing plants thrive through the care and techniques I’ve learned.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PROFESSOR?
Both Professor Bower and Professor Shelinski have been incredible mentors. Professor Bower is deeply knowledgeable and has a great way of making complex topics approachable. Professor Shelinski’s hands-on teaching style and real-world insights have been invaluable in preparing me for the industry.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTERNSHIP WITH LITTLE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL.
I was a Landscape Intern, maintaining the grounds, planting flower beds, and assisting with large-scale landscaping projects. Preparing the grounds for the Little League World Series was an incredible experience. It was fulfilling to contribute to an event that brings so much joy to my local community.
INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS ARE THE CORNERSTONE OF A PENN COLLEGE EDUCATION. HOW HAVE YOU WITNESSED THIS?
Through guest speakers, internships, and my work-study position, I’ve had the chance to learn from industry professionals who’ve opened my eyes to the variety of opportunities in horticulture. I've also had the opportunity to travel to the National Collegiate Landscape Competition, an annual three-day event with real-world competitions and networking with leaders at the largest career fair in the green industry.
HOW IS PENN COLLEGE HELPING YOU DESIGN THE CAREER OF YOUR DREAMS?
I want to start my own business, focusing on small-scale landscaping projects that are both functional and beautiful. My goal is to design spaces that improve people’s lives and the environment. Penn College has equipped me with hands-on experience, industry connections, and the confidence to pursue a meaningful career in horticulture.
