"The further into my degree I get, the more I can see how endless my opportunities are. After I graduate, the sky is the limit for how far I go. I could work for companies all over the world that are looking for skilled engineers with a hands-on background."
Matthew Woolcock
- Student
- Welding & Metal Fabrication
He came to pursue a career in welding. Running since age 8, Penn College provided the opportunity to continue to do what he loves at a competitive level. The combination has been greater than imagined with rare instruction using electron beam welding, a Cross Country conference championship, and a bond with teammates that will last a lifetime.
TAKING THE LEAD
Q&A with Matthew
WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT THE WORLD OF WELDING?
Welding is a very interesting trade to be involved in. Look around. Virtually everything requires some form of welding: bridges, the cars we drive, the building we attend class in. The world would function very differently without people like myself who want to pass on and advance this trade for generations to come.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS AND WHY?
This year, I am very excited to learn more in my Advanced High Energy Density Processes class. Not only am very blessed to have Tony Joy as an instructor, but I also have the opportunity to learn about electron beam welding which is rare for welding students.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SUMMER.
I worked for McCarl's in Muncy and Beaver Falls, PA. McCarl's is an industrial contractor that hires their employees out of local labor unions including the local pipefitters. As an engineering intern, with background in welding, I got to work alongside of their project engineering and their inspection teams.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RUNNING AND WHAT DREW YOU TO THE PENN COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM?
I have been running since I was eight years old and Penn College gave me the opportunity to continue doing what I love at a competitive level.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT YOUR COACH? TEAMMATES?
There is something very special about being part of a team that bonds as well as ours does. For starters, we couldn't ask for a better coach. Coach Leeser is everything an athlete could ask for. He pushes us in practice, helps us prepare for math exams, and has us over for supper. Our teammates are more than people we run with. They are like brothers and sisters. We go to church together, study together, eat together, and many more things outside of our training time. I can confidently say that we would do anything for each other.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN THE WILDCAT UNIFORM.
Winning the Conference Championship last year was a moment that I will remember for a very long time.
HOW IS PENN COLLEGE HELPING YOU DESIGN THE CAREER OF YOUR DREAMS?
The further into my degree I get, the more I can see how endless my opportunities are. After I graduate, the sky is the limit for how far I go. I could work for companies all over the world that are looking for skilled engineers with a hands-on background.
ANY ADVICE TO STUDENT-ATHLETES CONSIDERING THE WILDCAT EXPERIENCE?
It is critical that you find a good balance between school, sports, and your spiritual life. The time will come when you feel overwhelmed. In this moment, trust in the Lord, and seek out your teammates and coaches for assistance.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ALL WHO INVEST IN YOUR PENN COLLEGE EXPERIENCE?
Thank you for all that you do to make our lives easier as student athletes! It isn't said enough, but we are very thankful for all that you do to support us as we pursue our careers and passions.
Guaranteed Momentum
