Making connections
Justin was one of several students to attend the GIE+Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, and “Landscapes 2016,” a simultaneous educational/networking event sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals.
When he was 16 years old, Justin started doing landscaping jobs to earn spending money. After considering a career in chemical engineering, he decided to pursue his passion for landscaping/horticulture and earn a degree from Penn College. Today he’s a proud business owner with nine full-time employees.
I became interested in making this a career when I was a freshmen in college. I originally wanted to become a chemical engineer, but after one year I decided that it wasn’t for me. I went back into landscaping where I was enjoying what I was doing everyday. My interest for landscaping actually came from my late grandfather. He taught me the value of a dollar and the attention to detail that it takes to be successful in this line of work.
I’m more of a hands-on learner. At Penn College, I knew I would get lots of lab time and gain job-like experience. Overall, I wanted to get more experience with hardscaping, which I definitely did. I was able to pick courses that aligned with my interests.
I chose Penn College for one reason: hands-on technology. I didn't want to learn how to install patios and know plants by reading a book. I wanted to be able to learn physically. Penn College allowed me to do that and much more.
I benefited from the knowledge of my professors and the ability to network with other established landscaping companies while I was at the college.
While I was at Penn College, I was a student ambassador at the GIE Landscape Expo. I served as the Horticulture Club president and participated in the NCLC competition.
I enjoyed everything at Penn College. It's honestly hard to narrow it down to just one event or one class. I would say the memories that I have from Penn College are some of the best memories in my life.
