Q&A with Corey

WHEN DID YOU FIRST FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR CAREER FIELD AND WHY?

I fell in love with the building automation career field during my first internship when I was able to see everything I’ve learned in labs and classes be put into real world application. The satisfaction of finding solutions to a multitude of problems keeps me itching for more.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR FIELD?

I enjoy the combination of hands-on field work along with the ability to sit down. Being able to hone in on programming and preparing for projects is the perfect balance to being on a job site completing a project.

HOW DID YOUR MILITARY EXPERIENCE GIVE YOU A LEG UP WHEN IT CAME TIME FOR COLLEGE?

My military experience gave me the opportunity to learn how to communicate with fellow peers and taught me discipline when it comes to education.

WHAT IS SOMETHING COOL YOU LEARNED AT PCT OR A FUN PROJECT YOU WORKED ON?

One of our intro labs in the building automation program showed how simple something may seem but in reality it requires a bit more than one would think. We were able to take commercial digital direct controls to modulate hot plates to hold water at a set temperature with precision. Using these controls, I am able to, not only apply it in a work scenario, but also at home with all kinds of applications. For example, I can regulate temperature for hydroponic gardening, brewing, and even home lighting.

IF SOMEONE WERE INTERESTED IN PENN COLLEGE, WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL THEM?

Penn College is the best of both worlds when it comes to furthering your education. You are able to enjoy the benefits of being involved in organizations and student life while also gaining hands-on experience in real-world applications.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH FACULTY AND/OR THE PENN COLLEGE FAMILY?

The Penn College faculty that I’ve met with have been beyond helpful in all aspects. I have been able to create professional relationships and have enjoyed learning from experienced professionals. Being able to rely on the faculty and staff has set Penn College above the rest in terms of quality and standards.

military experience

"I took advantage of the Montgomery GI Bill, federal tuition assistance, and the in-state tuition benefit Penn College offers. You will honestly have a hard time finding a school that supports its military veterans as well as Penn College does."

Internship

Preparation for the real world

Summer internships are a perfect way to put skills learned during the semester to work. For three straight summers, Corey interned with Trane (twice at Trane Virginia and recently at Trane Columbus). In his latest assignment, Corey worked with a turn-key project manager and subcontractors to handle project documentation, safety coordination, and submittal processes on a variety of projects.
