"Without a doubt, I would encourage any student who has the opportunity to go on a global experience to do it. Life is precious. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. And these opportunities do not happen often."
He knew from a young age that he was destined to make a difference. The Human Services & Restorative Justice program at Penn College was the perfect fit. From being on the wrestling team and speaking at a collegewide dedication ceremony to taking a life-changing global experience course, Colin seized every opportunity to make connections, broaden his horizons, and pave his way to a game-changing career.
The entire trip was memorable. Everything from meeting everyone at the airport, boarding the plane, facilitating the domestic violence event, and participating in all the activities with my classmates was a treat. We shared so many memorable moments and learned so much about each other throughout the trip. However, if I had to pick a memorable moment, it was seeing the Alaskan mountain goats walking on the edge of the peaks. I have seen mountain goats on National Geographic shows, but viewing the animals in real life exceeds what we learn/see on a screen.
Without a doubt, I would encourage any student who has the opportunity to go on a global experience to do it. Life is precious. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. And these opportunities do not happen often. The value of a global travel experience transcends one’s knowledge and experiences to levels previously unknown. The experience one gains from traveling holds so much value that he can carry those experiences for the rest of his life. It also forces one to see life from a different perspective, from the lens of other people, places, and things, something a person can only gain through a global/traveling experience. Ultimately, I believe that participating in a travel experience pushes people out of their comfort zone, making them a better person.
I want to personally thank everyone who invested in our students’ global experience. The opportunity to travel and have an academic adventure is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The food, culture, lessons, and joyful experiences that we gained is so meaningful because of the memories that were created. These opportunities could not have come to fruition without the gifts and financial support from our college employees, alumni, friends, and donors. When we are supported as students, our lives are positively transformed forever. By extension, those who invested in us share that honor and grace as we use the lessons from our experience to transform the world into a better tomorrow. Thank you all!
The world of human services gives me hope. I have learned so much throughout my academic career. However, what sticks with me the most is knowing that there are people who genuinely care about others while doing their best to make the world a better place. Thus, I feel inspired to help others be productive members of the community and society, even on days when I don’t feel like it.
Penn College has afforded me an excellent education through exceptional classroom instruction, an organized curriculum, state-of-the art laboratories, academic tutoring, and the best tools and resources to succeed. I am incredibly fortunate to have found Penn College, and it will be an honor to graduate from this institution.
I genuinely like all my professors; each instructor is unique; they all have positively impacted me. Due to the specificity of the question, the professor that distinctly sticks out in my memory is Dr. Justin Ingram (faculty of biology). When I first came to Penn College, I was not used to the rigorous and intense college-level coursework, so I struggled. Dr. Ingram taught the importance of a strong mindset, discipline, and how to focus on understanding and retaining knowledge. Most importantly, he set the bar high and did not lower the standards for anyone. His teaching style forced me to achieve my academic goals despite the hardship and frustration of being a student.

Colin Browne Jr.
Colin and his classmates set off on a service learning experience to explore new perspectives related to domestic violence. While there, students took part in outdoor adventures, had countless wildlife encounters, and experienced the region's unique culture at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Anchorage Museum.
Thanks to a generous donation, Penn College is now home to the Fish Real Estate Leadership Challenge Course. In this video, Colin shares his perspective on the new course and the lessons he learned.
