"I like helping people and working in the community. It makes me feel good to know I'm making a difference"
Chad Cashwell
After a history of factory and skilled labor jobs, Chad was ready for a change. When he learned about the EMT Pre-Apprenticeship program at Penn College, he dove in. Not only was this immersive 16-week training provided at no charge, he was paid for his time. Today he’s enjoying his new career as a full-time EMT for Susquehanna Regional EMS.
TAKING THE LEAD
Q&A with Chad
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURSUE THE EMT PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
I chose to pursue the program because it was an awesome opportunity to better myself. It was challenging, but it was paid training to pursue a new career with a better work schedule and better work-life balance.
WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN EMT?
I was always interested in a career in which I would be able to help the community. I was raised to appreciate the importance of community service.
TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING COOL/FASCINATING YOU LEARNED?
I think it was fascinating to learn in detail how the human body works. I have also found it cool that with additional training it opens the door for many more opportunities within the medical field.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE PROGRAM?
My favorite and the most exciting aspect of the program was succeeding by passing the National Registry EMT exam and starting to apply the things I learned in the real world.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?
A typical day for me at work is very busy, nonstop, but very rewarding. I am seeing a lot of improvement in my patient care and computer skills as well. Every patient transport involves completing an electronic patient care report.
WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL OTHERS WHO ARE CONSIDERING THE PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
I would tell others that are considering going through the program that it is well worth your while if you feel as though you are interested. You will definitely have to apply yourself in order to be successful.
