The first time Brittany visited Penn College, she said it felt like home. She’s a Dean’s List regular, a dual Accounting and Banking & Finance major, cross country runner, student ambassador, member of the National Honor Society, and treasurer of the Accounting Society. Now that she’s in her senior year, we think it’s safe to say she’s found a home.

Q&A with Brittany

HOW DID YOU KNOW ACCOUNTING WAS THE CAREER PATH FOR YOU?

I was lucky enough to be immersed into the business environment at a young age - my mom was a bank manager. As you can imagine, I got to see and talk to a variety of people within the bank and business owners. Although, it wasn’t until I took an accounting class in high school and got to do an apprenticeship with a tax firm that I was sure accounting was the right career path for me.

WHY DID YOU SELECT PENN COLLEGE?

I tried to pick the best school that would not only award me with the skills and knowledge I needed, but also allow me to feel at home even when I wasn’t. I visited several colleges, even ones that claimed to have the best of the best business programs, but none of them could amount to Penn College. As soon as I stepped onto campus I knew that’s where I wanted to go. There’s an overall sense of family and everyone is so helpful. The faculty are committed to making sure you can achieve the goals you’ve set out to accomplish.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS AND WHY?

One of my favorite classes in the accounting program was the individual taxation class. The class required a lot of work and studying but it was well worth it. All the studying didn’t go to waste by any means since we got to apply that knowledge to the tax lab where we were able to prepare individuals taxes. It was fun getting to put our skills to the test and learn how to communicate with the public in a professional setting, answer tax questions, and learn how taxes work. In the end, the class took a lot of work but it was well worth it because it taught me more than just what was in a book.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT ABOUT LEARNING AT PENN COLLEGE?

How committed the faculty are in making sure every student reaches their potential, how hands on the learning is, and the small class sizes. I especially enjoyed the small class sizes because it allowed me to get one-on-one help when I needed it. Being here pushed me to be the best version of myself, reach my full potential, and take advantage of opportunities I may not have gotten somewhere else.

IF SOMEONE WERE INTERESTED IN PENN COLLEGE, WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL THEM?

My advice to anyone interested in Penn College is to get the full college experience by partaking in one of the College’s tours. You get advice from current students, sit in on classes in your field of study, and meet the dean and professors who will be there for you throughout your college career.

HOW DO YOU BENEFIT FROM THE COMBINATION OF THEORY + HANDS-ON LEARNING?

The accounting program does a great job of integrating not only theory but hands on learning. Sometimes it isn’t as simple as what we learn from a book, and real-world situations can be complex. I’m thankful that Penn College integrated both types of learning because I’m more equipped to make the right decisions I need for the job setting.

Future Made By Hand

"After graduation I plan to go on to get my master’s in either forensic accounting or taxation, while also obtaining a job in the accounting field. From there, my plans are to obtain the work experience needed to obtain my CPA license."

Finding Balance

Brittany gives it her all in the classroom and on the cross country course. Proud to represent the Wildcats in the NCAA Division III conference, she enjoys the escape of running. "It's my stress reliever," she says. "I kind of get away from everything for those couple of hours while I'm running. And I really enjoy being on the cross country team at Penn College because we're like this little community, this little family. We all go out and do things together. It's just so much fun."
