Q&A with Alicia

WHEN DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH NURSING?

Ever since I was young I always cared for others and wanted to always lend a helping hand. I fell in love with nursing when I worked at Bayada Home Health caring for an adorable three year old little girl. Going to work and helping her every day didn't feel like a job. I felt so happy I could be a part of her care.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A MASTER'S IN NURSING EDUCATION?

I obtained my associate's and bachelor's degrees from Penn College. After obtaining my bachelor's degree, I actually took on two teaching roles as a clinical instructor focusing on pediatrics. I love it! I wanted to continue on so I could also teach not only in the clinical setting, but also the classroom setting. I love knowing that I am a part of making great future nurses.

WHY PENN COLLEGE?

Penn College is a great school. The nursing program is excellent. The master's program is also flexible and is mostly done online. It helps with the busy schedule I already have. The instructors are also wonderful.

TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING COOL/FASCINATING THAT YOU'VE LEARNED.

Well, so far I have learned a lot in this program. My favorite thing so far was learning how to write up a simulation experience for students as well as conduct it.

WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL OTHERS WHO ARE CONSIDERING THE MASTER'S IN NURSING EDUCATION AT PENN COLLEGE?

If they are looking to further their career in nursing education, they should consider this program. It's flexible and the program itself is not very long.

HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO MAINTAIN A WORK/LIFE BALANCE WHILE IN THE PROGRAM?

Organization! I work three jobs, have been fixing up my house, and doing this program. I had to ensure I had a planner to make my life easier. I am also able to make time for self-care and friends, which is very important!

HOW HAVE YOU FELT SUPPORTED IN OBTAINING YOUR MENTOR AND PRACTICUM EXPERIENCES?

I feel very supported. I actually had to find another preceptor last minute due to health reasons and the faculty were able to help me and reassured me that everything would work out and it did.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE.

I decided to do my clinical practicum experience in pediatrics. I already teach clinicals in this setting, but I thought it would be beneficial to see how another person does their clinical and help me learn a few things.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE MNE PROGRAM?

The flexibility and independence. It holds the student accountable for their learning.
Real-World Ready

"After I graduate I hope to land a teaching job in pediatrics somewhere where I can teach in the classroom and clinical setting and hopefully start a family!"
