Q&A with Hunter Truck
WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE INDUSTRY YOU SERVE?
The transportation industry is a vital part of our economy and overall way of life. All other industries rely on trucks to perform and the service we provide. Our industry has growing concerns with the skilled labor shortage impacting us all. Our society needs capable, motivated individuals with a desire for a career in servicing trucks. In a nutshell, about half of all current diesel technicians will retire in the next decade. Although this provides ample opportunity for those interested in this career path, there are simply not enough students choosing this path to make up for the shortfall. I’m excited about the opportunity to serve others, connect with individuals and spread the word about the opportunity. As the technical recruiter for Hunter Truck, I get to connect with instructors preparing students to enter the workforce, assist managers in finding new team members, and help job seekers begin their career with our company. My role is very rewarding, and I enjoy the opportunity to serve others.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT YOUR COMPANY'S CULTURE/MISSION?
Although I’m proud to work for a company representing a brand with the reputation of Peterbilt, what I appreciate most about the culture at Hunter Truck is our focus and commitment to our customers and employees.
HOW DID YOUR COMPANY FIRST CONNECT WITH PENN COLLEGE?
We have partnered with Penn College in a variety of ways including; providing current industry training to instructors, donating equipment, and participating in events like the annual Diesel Technology Competition, which provides scholarship opportunities, summer internships, and recruitment of students. The initial connection goes far beyond my involvement as a recruiter at Hunter Truck. In Hunter Truck’s 85+ year history, we’ve partnered with many schools across our territory. Although I'm not sure when our relationship began, we have plenty of Penn College alumni employed at Hunter Truck locations.
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PENN COLLEGE IS A SOUND INVESTMENT? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RETURN?
Although I primarily focus on recruitment of entry-level diesel and collision technicians, Penn College alumni are employed at all levels at Hunter Truck. One example is an individual who has been employed here for over 20 years. Although he’s held other roles, he currently supports a large portion of our four-state territory as a service support manager. I believe Penn College is a sound investment for students for many reasons. It is apparent the school, staff, and instructors care for students and are focused on their success. Penn College keeps their program, curriculum, and equipment up to date to remain current with industry standards. They foster close, meaningful relationships with employers to help ensure positive outcomes for students who apply themselves.
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU VALUE MOST WHEN RECRUITING PENN COLLEGE STUDENTS & ALUMNI?
Based on my experience, Penn College graduates are poised to transition from student life to the workforce. They seem motivated, possess a solid foundation to advance, and are career focused.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERING PENN COLLEGE?
First and foremost, tour the campus. I have no doubt Penn College offers all the resources you need to begin your career. However, you need to think about and develop questions that will help you decide what’s best for you. You must decide to apply yourself and work to reach your goals. What is it you need to make the most of your decision to succeed? What help do you need to reach your full potential? Ask the questions. Whatever path you choose, be accountable and do it with full intent to succeed.
Additionally, I highly recommend you get firsthand feedback. Make sure you ask for help to connect with other positive, motivated, hardworking individuals like yourself. Employers, as well as successful students and alumni, will be happy to answer your questions as you consider your options and career path.
