Fundamentals of Speech
SPC101
Introduction to both the theory and application of public speaking methods and evaluation, and the development and presentation of persuasive and informative speeches. Also included is the study of modern communication theory and rhetorical theory. Course work includes participation in a variety of public speaking situations.

Fundamentals of Small Group Communication
SPC102
Introduction to the principles and processes of small group communication. Focuses on the skills for effective participation and leadership in small group settings. Provides practice in problem-solving, group decision-making, information sharing, and group interaction.

Interpersonal Communication
SPC201
Introduction to the theories, models, and practices of person-to-person communication, including a brief exposure to theories and methods of organizational communication. Emphasizes conflict management, gender, and cross-cultural issues.

Organizational Communication
SPC301
Analysis and evaluation of formal and informal patterns of communication within organizations; exploration of both theoretical and practical aspects of how such patterns develop. Subject areas include communication aspects involved in social issues, briefings, conflict management, interview situations, conferences, administration, and decision making. Considerable emphasis is placed upon issues of diversity, including but not limited to gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. (Cultural Diversity) Spring Only.

Intercultural Communication
SPC302
Investigation and interpretation of the many forms of communication that exist in different cultures. Emphasis on helping students toward an understanding and celebration of cultural diversity especially as it exists in the process of symbolic exchange that we call communication. Among areas covered are cultural variance in interpretation of language, symbolic ambiguity, culturally based conflict management, assimilation, and effective communication strategies across cultures.
