Automotive History in the 20th Century

Historical milestones in the development, manufacturing, and increased availability to the public of the American automobile over the last 100 years. Emphasis on the historical, political, and economic impacts on society. Topics include, but are not limited to, the historical impact of the automobile's development on society and on the economy as well as the manufacturing of automobiles and its impact on culture, civil society, the legal system, the political system, workforce migration, urbanization, corporate development, wartime activities, the interstate system, and the Americanization of other countries. Vintage Automotive Mechanical & Applications I

RST115

Theory and operational understanding of the mechanisms that are used to propel vehicles. Emphasis on drivetrain components used in pre-1972 vehicles. Study includes, but is not limited to, basic operation of 6-volt electrical systems, fuel and carburation systems, engines construction and operation, and early mechanical braking systems. Additional studies on subsystems in drivetrain operation. Fall Only.

Automotive Research & Design

RST120

Examination of knowledge and resources necessary to restore a domestic or European vehicle to original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) foreign and domestic specifications. Study includes the use of current technologies in durability and preservation in conjunction with era-specific authenticity from pre-1900 through 1972. Emphasis on the history and design styles of the Art Deco era and how it influenced the automobile. Overview of vehicle validation, the judging processes established by the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA), and the cost analysis process used to determine a vehicle's value in relation to the time and investment of restoration. Spring Only.

Vintage Metal Fabrication & Applications I

RST130

Study of panel repair procedures for vehicles from 1900-1972 model years. Emphasis on industry best practices for non-structural panel restoration procedures. Introduction to pattern making, non-structural preliminary measurements, and blue printing a replacement part. Study of basic hand-working tools and equipment for development of low crown panels and compound curves. Fall Only.

Automotive Restoration Internship

RST150

Specialized work experience to be performed in a participating restoration facility. The experience will apply knowledge and skills developed during prior coursework. The internship allows industry time for a student to experience areas of specialization and make an informed decision on a focused training path. The experience requires a minimum of 225 hours of work. Summer Only.

Automotive Upholstery

Introduction to automotive interior upholstery components and interior restoration methods. Topics include upholstery foams and fasteners, taking proper measurements and pattern making, and designing, producing, and attaching a custom seat cover. Study of vinyl and convertible tops as well as the cleaning, care, and proper upkeep of different types of interiors and upholstery. As needed.

Study and practical application of metal working skills using power equipment. Emphasis on metal-shaping processes and construction of complex panels. Spring Only.

Vintage Automotive Final Assembly & Applications

RST215

Application of restoration techniques to 1900-1972 vintage automobiles with emphasis on final paint finish condition. Topics include process of fitting patterns and reproduction of fixed and movable glass, installation of sound-deadening materials and weather stripping, and use of sanding and polishing procedures to produce a suitable finishing required for show application. Spring Only.
