Technical Drawing I

Basic principles and skills of drafting as a graphic language using the parametric modeling approach. Topics include technical sketching, SolidWorks® CAD operations and procedures, shape description, geometric construction, multiview projection, sectional views, auxiliary views, revolutions, threads and fasteners, and application of dimensions and tolerancing. Other topics include detail views, part drawings, assembly drawings, manufacturing processes, surface finishing, descriptive geometry, and the use of vendor part catalogs. ANSI/ASME drawing standards and practices are emphasized. Fall Only.

Technical drawing procedures using SolidWorks® CAD operations in compliance with the ANSI standards to develop finished drawings. Drawing assignments involve technical sketching, shape description, geometric construction, multiview projection, sectional views, auxiliary views, revolutions, threads and fasteners, application of dimensions and tolerancing, detail views, part drawings, and assembly drawings. Other topic will include manufacturing processes, surface finishing, descriptive geometry, and acquiring and using vendor part catalogs. ANSI/ASME drawing standards and practices are emphasized. Fall Only.

Design and drafting applications as they apply to castings and forgings, welded parts, plastic parts, piping details, sheet metal developments and intersections are covered using parametric modeling approach. Also covered are various motion drives and mechanisms, including cam, gear and roller chain sprocket design and terminology. The use of spread sheet calculations for design of cams, gears and sprockets are covered in addition to standard (dialog-box driven) design accelerators. In addition to software applications – freehand sketching at ideation stage is emphasized. ANSI/ASME drawing standards and practices are emphasized. Spring Only.

Technical drawing procedures using SolidWorks® CAD operations in compliance with the ANSI/ASME standards to develop finished drawings. Course work provides an understanding of the function, design, terminology, definitions, and calculations used to prepare finished drawings from the sketches of sheet metal parts, welded parts, piping details and assemblies, cams, gears, drives and mechanisms. Spring Only.

Overview of civil, structural, electrical, electronics, and architectural drafting and design applications. Topics are explored through lecture and CAD-based drawing assignments. AutoCAD and other CAD-related software is used. Fall Only.

Engineering Drawing Dimension & Tolerance Specifications

Application of industrial dimensioning principles, tolerances, and fits per current ASME standards, with a focus on their importance in the design of detail, sub-assemblies and assemblies for the manufacturing of interchangeable parts. CAD software is used to produce the various drawings required; therefore, prior 2D and 3D CAD experience is required. Fall Only.

Engineering Production Drawings & Tool Design
CCD245
Preparation of standard manufacturing drawings, including detail, sub-assemblies and assemblies. The designs required for tooling are generated concurrently with the design of the part or assembly. The various steps involved in the process of designing individual parts or assemblies is used to show the effects the process can have on production tooling. Skills learned include the use of various resources to determine strength of materials used in the design, the use of standard vendors’ parts, the use of different drafting techniques to design parts, and the use of required production tooling. CAD software is used to produce the various drawings required. Spring Only.
