The Weatherization Workforce Development Initiative is a pilot program, funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to create a sustainable pipeline of employees into the weatherization industry. The pilot aims to build partnerships between Career and Technical Centers (CTCs) and Weatherization employers to a) introduce students to the industry, b) embed relevant skills and certifications, and incentivize work-based learning. Schools and employers interested in participating should contact the Clean Energy Center.

You can hire students under 18 years of age through the Cooperative Education programs at your local Career and Technical Center (CTC). These programs allow students to gain hands-on experience while earning school credit.

To do so, you'll need to establish a relationship with a nearby CTC that offers relevant programs. The Clean Energy Center can help you make these connections! Once you start working with your local school, the Cooperative Education Coordinator will help with developing a written training agreement, ensure that you are meeting all legal requirements, and review supervision and training guidelines.

By following these steps, you can effectively contribute to the education and career preparation of young people while also addressing the growing demand for skilled workers in the sustainable building industry.

The Building Science Principles and Blower Door and Weatherization courses can be easily integrated into trades like carpentry, construction, and HVAC. Topics like air sealing, ductwork, and energy efficiency align well with existing curricula. These courses provide valuable insights into whole-home approaches and can be adapted to fit various schedules. By incorporating these materials, instructors can enhance their lessons and equip students with essential skills for the building performance field.

Estimated Time Commitment:

  • Weatherization and Blower Door: 3-4 hours
  • Building Science Principles: 8 hours (can be adapted)

These are approximate estimates and can be adjusted based on the specific course content and the instructor's needs.
