Miss Dawn Wahler caught my eye from afar sitting on one of those high, drafting stools in the cavernous drafting room in WACC’s “Unit 6,” a historic former trolley barn.
My friend Elaine, perhaps seeing me gazing, said, “That’s Dawn.”
Then I went to Dan Doyle’s World Civ class upstairs – and there was Dawn. I could not engage her in conversation during Dr. Doyle’s lectures because she paid attention.
But soon thereafter, I saw her in the WACC library located in the old Rishel Furniture Building. I made it my business to sit at her table.
Studying, Dawn seemed to already know the causes of the French Revolution, for example. And I did not.
So, I tried to “dazzle” her with some of my experiences traveling in Europe while stationed there for three years with America’s Air Force – just prior to enrolling at WACC. She did not seem “dazzled,” but I at least got Dawn’s phone number!
Dawn did very well in both semesters of World Civ, but I got the “big prize,” as we married about two years later!
Post Script: We saved our pennies and, about three years later, we traveled abroad using the book “Europe on Five Dollars a Day” by Frommer’s!
The rest is history.
