Fall Sports Seasons Continue for Penn College

The fall sports season continued last week for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletes as the soccer teams each posted a win.



Men’s Soccer
On Sept. 20 in NEAC action against Wilson College, the Wildcats won, 2-0, as they got second-half scores on an own-goal and a shot by Austin Dowrick, of Olney, Maryland, on an assist by Devin Sherman, of Butler.

Hosting SUNY Poly on Saturday, Penn College fell, 2-0, to drop to 4-6 overall and go to 2-2 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The visitors led in shots, 16-6, and shots on goal, 7-1.

Also, it was announced that Dowrick was named the NEAC Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 14-20. Dowrick helped lead the Wildcats to 2-0 week in NEAC play as he helped anchored a defense that gave up just one goal while also adding a goal and an assist on offense.

Women’s Soccer
Facing Wilson College on Sept. 20, Penn College dominated in a 4-0 win. Scoring goals for the Wildcats were Valerie Kubalak, of Spring Mills; Morgan Lutz, of Lewistown; Robyn Beddow, of Lancaster; and Chelsea Zembower, of Cherry Valley, New York. Penn College led in shots, 38-1 (19-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 8-0.

At Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, the Wildcats fell 1-0 in nonconference play. Penn College had five shots on goal and three corner kicks but failed to capitalize.

Back home on Saturday against SUNY Poly, the teams battled through two overtimes to a 2-2 standoff that left Penn College 3-4-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the NEAC. Hailee Hartman, of Lampeter, put the Wildcats on the scoreboard 6:07 into the match before Poly tied things just over a minute later. Lauren Herr, of Manheim, again gave Penn College the lead at the 22:38 mark before Poly ended the scoring at the 55:10 mark. Penn College led in shots, 16-11 (10-6 on goal), and held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

Women’s Volleyball
On Saturday in NEAC action at SUNY Poly, the Wildcats lost to Morrisville State, 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-15), and to the host team, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-13), to drop to 1-15 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Cross-Country
On Saturday at the Lock Haven University Invitational, Matt DeSanto, of South Williamsport, led the Penn College men’s team as he finished 88th in a field of 257 in 27:25.61 over 8K. Liam McGarvey, of Cogan Station, was second for the Wildcat men as he finished 185th in 29:46. The Penn College men ended last in a 16-team field. For the Penn College women, Erin Sullivan, of Elizabethtown, ended No. 240 in a field of 258 in 31:30 over 5K while Allison Bailey, of West Chester, ended 242nd in 31:46. As a team, the Wildcats were last in a 19-team field.

Men’s Tennis
In its lone match of the week, Penn College dropped an 8-1 decision at College Misericordia. Ben Leibig, of Lebanon, was the lone winner for the Wildcats, at the No. 1 singles position.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Leibig had been named the North Atlantic Conference West Division Player of the Week for the period of Sept. 14-20 after helping the Wildcats get their first win of the season after winning both of singles and doubles matches against Lebanon Valley on Sept.17.

Women’s Tennis
The week’s lone match against Summit University was canceled and the team’s record stayed at 0-2.

Golf
Competing in their first of two back-to-back two-day tournaments during the week, the Wildcats finished 11th among 12 teams in the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational at Dauphin Highlands last Sunday and Monday. Penn College golfers combined for rounds of 351-360 for a 711 total in an event won by Franklin and Marshall, which finished with a 581 total. Leading Penn College was Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, with a 79-80 – 159 (tied for 29th) and Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey, with an 84-90 – 174 (47th).

On Friday and Saturday at the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational, Penn College finished fourth in a five-team field after its top four golfers had combined rounds of 346 and 335 for a two-day 681 total. SUNY Cobleskill’s “A” team win with a 616. Individually for the Wildcats, Baumbach led the way with an 80-81 -- 161 while Marks shot 90-83 – 173.
