Penn College Athletes Prep for Season Openers

Sunday, August 17, 2014

Preseason practice is underway and first games as a provisional member of both the NCAA Division III and North Eastern Athletic Conference loom on the horizon for Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports athletes.

Three Penn College teams open their seasons Aug. 29: men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Starting a week later will be the women’s tennis team, which opens Sept. 2, and cross-country teams, which open Sept. 6.

Another difference this season has the college’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis teams playing split fall and spring seasons, with most of the action for all three coming in the spring. The first golf match is set for Sept. 21 and the initial men’s tennis match is slated for Sept. 23.

In the provisional year of competition within the NEAC, Penn College teams will be eligible for playoffs and championships, though they will not be eligible for NCAA championship play. Until the college becomes a full NCAA member, it will continue to hold membership in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, which will allow its teams to still compete for national championships.

New Athletics Website Launched
Earlier this month, the college announced the launch of its new website. Penn College partnered with SIDEARM Sports, one of the premier collegiate athletics website providers, to create a fan-friendly, interactive site.

2014 Hall of Fame
In late June, Penn College announced the 2014 inductees for its Athletics Hall of Fame.

The class is just the third to be inducted after being established in 2012 by Kennell.

The inductees are Mark Cordeiro (Class of 2009), Lisa Miller (’09), Mike Paulhamus, Andy Richardson and Phillip Woodring (’09).

The induction ceremony will be held Oct. 10, during Penn College’s Homecoming celebrations.
